In fact, the child's surname isn't explicitly on a b.cert. One is left to infer their surname is the same as one of their parents. Also, there's no requirement that the child be named - the requirement is that a birth be rego'ed within 6 weeks. The older, pre-1969 b.certs have a column 10 for "name entered after registration", but this wasn't always used.

Reggie isn't correct - obviously column 10 ("name entered after registration") is one obvious proof of this - another example is that a child's father's name can be added to a b.cert. There's a time scale for this change - if it's fairly soon (I forget what that means - up to 3m or maybe 6m,) one can just go to the local subdistrict registrar and add the father - if it's longer (maybe up to a y), one has to get permission from the district supervisor to add the father - beyond this, one needs permission from the Registrar General to add a father - I've heard of instances of permission being given 30y after the birth. As Reggie says, the facts of a child's birth do not change, but what can appear on a registration of that birth does change.

One can obviously get typographical errors changed.
Not only b.certs can be changed - d.certs can be changed too - changes by a coronor are one obvious instance of this.

The birth cert is NEVER changed - it can't be. The facts of a child's birth do not alter, no matter what happens subsequently

Ok thanks Andrew I did think that but wanted to double check Jane sorry just for future reference if you know? Is that the same if someone is adopted at a later age ie over 10 or 12 or do they change the certificate then? sorry to pick your brains

The original records remain as they were recorded at birth

Hi can anyone tell me please if a person changes their surname legally by deed poll later in life ie in their 20's will the surname on their birth records be their original one or the new one? thanks :-0
