If Tower Hamlets is so well covered, it's a pity the local index at:
http://www.thbmd.co.uk/search.php
doesn't have a key online. E.g., say I do a look up and get:

Result Year Forename Initial Surname Ref Next
1 1863 Sophia SAYER /C77 1/493/ Order
2 1863 John SMITH /C77 1/493/ Order

currently, I'm left to guess C77=All Saints Stepney.

A similar look up at
http://www.southtyneside.info/applications/2/registersearch/default.aspx

gets:
John SMITH
Spouse: Ann ARMSTRONG
Register: C G2
Entry: 297
Date: 31/08/1862

but here I can go to their online key:
http://www.southtyneside.info/article/10778/Marriage-indexes

and see:
South Shields
Church of England Computer Reference
Holy Trinity C G

Actually, many of the online local indexes give the info explicitly, so a look up via:
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd

can get something like:
Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1863
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
SMITH John CLAYTON Ellen St. Catherine, Wigan Wigan & Leigh C29/2/6
SMITH John CLAYTON Rebecca Manchester, St. George Manchester 89/1/175
SMITH John DAVIS Margaret West Derby, Register Office or Registrar Attended Liverpool REG_WD/23/151

Hi Reggie, I think the query links to this B'ham thread:

VERY limited info

"Because this project started with a particular focus towards the East End of London, the records held are richest for the RDs of Stepney, Mile End, St George in the East, Whitechapel, and Shoreditch for the years 1837 to 1911 (after which the spouse name is included in the Index). Although our volunteers have contributed data from other areas and other years, coverage elsewhere can be still patchy ... but is increasing - we currently have well over a quarter of a million (just under 270,000) entries!"

Which area are you looking for?

Some time ago I think it was on here that someone shared a website where you could input the Ref from FreeBMD and it narrowed down the church where the ceremony probably took place.

I did make a note, but on my old computer.

Does anyone have the link.

Please <3 <3

Thanks.
