Usually see that for birth registrations though. What year was the marriage?

It would normally mean to look at the entry in December 98 but usualy used for births because a birth can be registered late or be re-registered but thats not the case with marriages,

marriages are registered at the time and date of the marriage took place,

but if after the marriage the couple saw a mistake on their marriage cert then i suppose it could have been re-registered

The GRO must have messed up somehow because the wife is only listed once.

Hi Rose
Yes that was the conclusion I came to as well. It's not the only one - I'm the only one listed in the marriage index - my poor husband doesn't seem to exist. Does that mean that I have been living in sin for nearly 40 years. lol.

Once again many thanks to all who posted replies to me.
Kind regards to all
Lyn

Lyn,

Where are you looking for your marriage? If its FreeBMD, it could be your husband hasn't been transcribed yet.

Here's some hits from FreeBMD - note both Puffitt entries lie between Clapp & Ruck:

Marriages Jun 1898 (>99%)
Bartlett Annie Cirencester 6a 731
Clapp Gerard John Cirencester 6a 731
May William George Cirencester 6a 731
TILLING Annie Cirencester 6a 731

Marriages Dec 1898 (>99%)
Hughes Amelia Ann Cirencester 6a 748a
Puffill William James Cirencester 6a 748a
Puffitt William James Cirencester 6a 748a

Marriages Jun 1899 (>99%)
Puffitt William James Cirencester 6a 849

1899q2 no hits at all on p848/850

Marriages Jun 1899 (>99%)
Plummer Elsie Davis Cirencester 6a 851
Ruck David Naunton Cirencester 6a 851

Now using Chris's URL:
Criteria entered: District: Cirencester, Parish: Siddington, Year From: 1898, Year To: 1899,
Number of entries matching criteria entered: 7
Groom Surname Groom Forename Bride Surname Bride Forename District Parish Building Year Register Entry
FARMER Joseph John Newton SMITH Sarah Ann Cirencester Siddington St Peter 1898 1 195
MAY William George TELLING Annie Cirencester Siddington St Peter 1898 1 196
CLAPP Gerard John BARTLETT Annie Cirencester Siddington St Peter 1898 1 197
PUFFITT William James HUGHES Amelia Ann Cirencester Siddington St Peter 1898 1 198
RUCK David Naunton PLUMMMER Elsie Davis Cirencester Siddington St Peter 1899 1 199
SHORT Lewis Peter CARPENTER Barbara Kate Cirencester Siddington St Peter 1899 1 200
WITTS George CORNISH Mary Cirencester Siddington St Peter 1899 1 201

So there's only one entry in the rego between Clapp & Ruck.

You would have to see the actual entry to see if and how it was altered.
I don't know where the originals are - maybe Gloucester City Library - that's where the bishop's transcripts are.

Hi Rose

No it wasn't freebmd, it was another site that has images. As it's been a few years since I've checked that source I had another look today and found that he is now there.
Rats!!! There's me thinking that it would be easy to trade him in for a hunky new model. ;-)

Hi mgnv

Thanks for your input.
It's unlikely that I will be able to see the original as I have a condition that prevents me from travelling more than a few miles at a time. In a way it's fortunate that this couple are not in my direct line so it isn't imperative that I solve the problem. It's just that I am intrigued by the GRO entry.
