Hi, I am wondering whether it is possible to search the remaining returns for the 1801-1831 census' anywhere?

Kind regards
Samantha

Not much has survived and is little more than head counts

FMP has 1831 for Nether Hallam, Sheffield

Have you Googled ?

Hi there, thankyou for your reply,

I'm wanting them for Yorkshire West Riding, or Yorkshire East Riding - I've goggled it but can't seem to find the actual returns anywhere. Would they be accesible anywhere?

Kind regards
Samantha

I doubt if they would be online, Samantha, if there are any. The best thing, I think, would be to contact the relevant archives / records office for that area to see if any were taken and, if so, if any have survived.
Good luck :)

It also depends on what you want to find out.

No address will be shown
Mainly just a Surname & Initial
And if you are lucky an occupation.

As said before prior to 1841 they were not census returns as we recognise them just headcounts. You only have to look at the 1841 and if you think that contains little information, those that went before had even less.

Sometimes you can be lucky and find more information than just head counts.

For example, the 1801 census for Hampstead Middlesex has not only the statistical information but also the original household schedules.

In some cases the schedules were very informative as the householder added additional info over and above that required....

For example

'House owned by H. White let to Winkbly, lodger'

'I have given my name to a similar paper in the parish of St. Ann Soho where I chiefly reside. My wife is given in St Ann Soho'

As previously suggested, to find out if an early census survives then have a look at the local record office online catalogue or contact them direct.

Good luck
Chris
