Middlemore Road was as put above 1881 - in reg. district of Kings Norton, sub-district Harborne, no mention of Smethwick.
If you go to google map, it does seem to come out as Smethwick though.

EDIT sorry, image does say 'Smethwick'.

Hi everyone,

So sorry not been able to long on had a little crisis after I posted and all thoughts of Fam History went out of my head.

Thanks Jill, for sending a PM it's but be back on track.

MarieCeleste & Rose,

Mary Ann / Marion's maiden name was Godfrey.

She was born in London in 1852 and Edward Stokes was born in Birmingham in 1843 Lily was their first child born in 1870.

I have looked for the Godfrey / Stokes marriage certificate all over the country using free bmd, Ancestry and specific reg districts with no luck.

Thanks again everyone, but I have to dash out now to take ma in law for hospital check up. Hopefully I will log on this afternoon.

Regards and thanks again everyone.

There is Bissell Street in B5. It's between Gooch Street and MacDonald Street.

It is closer to the city and I think it makes more sense for the Parish on the census being shown as St.Martins.

Most of it appears more modern units but there is Ephraim PhillipsHouse, a building which is restored c19th and Ephraim Phillips Business Centre

There is a pub on the corner. There is no name on it but according to the little icon it's the Sir Charles Napier.

This might be a way of confirming which census location is correct.

Off to shop then take the kids bowling.

Hi Choccy,

Thanks very much for the Stokes' info. I do not know if this is his family but have made notes of what you have found.

I haven't so far managed to find his marriage certificate either so I don't know who his parents were. All I have is his daughter's birth & marriage certificates to go on.

But thank you very much for your time and effort in helping me, it's very much appreciated.

Regards, Lou

Hi MarieCeleste, & RolloTheRed,

Many thanks RolloTheRed for explaining it so clearly. I've made a note so that the next time I get chance I will be able to look it up. Sounds like a really interesting district!

MarieCeleste, Thanks a lot for your time and trouble, it's very much appreciated, But such a shame they moved on.

I have them in 1881and I think there address is Marylebone Road, Harborne, Smethwick if that's any help.

Thanks again,

Lou

It was a family called Judge on the 1871 at no 112.

Will have a delve .....

I think you mean Bissel Street. What is left of Bissel Street is just off the Hagley Road. The district will be Quinton or Edbaston, prob. Edgbaston.
All you have to do is to open the census by county (central Birmingham was in Warwickshire or Warks for short) then civil parish. Edgbaston as 10 EDs (enumeration districts) so happy hunting ...
I think FPM has some sort of street to ED index.

Not far from Bissel Street is Chad Valley. Hagely Road is also much frequented by chavs with their traditional plumage of Burberry.

Hi MarieCeleste,

Many thanks.

The house number is 112 her name was Lily Marie Stokes, parents were Edward and MaryAnn/ Marian. He was a Brass Dresser.

Thanks again,

Lou

Update. I've taken a closer look at the birth certificate and it's spelt Bessill Street. But I suppose they could have got the spelling wrong.

Thanks again, Lou

Hi Lou, what number Bessel Street?

What was her name, and parents, just so we know if we're on the right track?

EDIT: Not finding a Bessel Street anywhere on the 1871 on FMP (tried variants too). There is a BISSELL Street - could that be it? Need more info, though as I'm not going to go through every house as there are lots!
