London Prison Records

I'm hoping for some general advice or help please.

There has been a suggestion of a short spell in prison for one of my husband's relatives. He lived all his life in London, so I think it is likely to be a London prison. He was born 1901, so probably sometime between 1920 and 1940 from what we know. Are there any sites I can access or can anyone help please.
Thanks in advance. :-)

Most prisons were not requited to keep their records for any length of time and as such many were just thrown away/destroyed.

One prison which did not do this was Wandsworth.

But you could try the London Metropolitan Archives

But do not think that because a crime was committed and tried in London that the sentence would have been in a London prison. Less thought in those days of family visiting etc., more about the punishment and rehabilitation than thinking of his well-being and having family support.
