I have only tried Family Tree Maker and I have one of the older versions. It can do what you detail above, but without cross-referencing, unless you write "see so-and-so".

BUT any program which can do what you want will be complicated and you will HAVE to read the instructions until you get the hang of it. FTM is not difficult and I am not a computer buff, but when I started I had to look up how to do each different thing. The instructions, though, are very easy to follow.

Thanks for that info. I tried Legacy on Family Search but got nowhere fast. Is PAF something different. I am not the most computer literate person & have a complete aversion to having to read copious instructions before I can start a task - hence the failure on Legacy. As stated before, I am quite happy building my tree on GR and quite happy to have the additional information stored separately & not necessarily linked although obviously linking would be easier.

It really would be worth investigating off-line programmes if you want to digitally record such detailed information.

Even then, it is always best to have a back up copy on an external device (disc/flash drive/external hard drive) in case your personal computer goes belly up!

Aside from the free PAF which Reggie has pointed out, there a number of commercial ones available, some of whom give trial access for a couple of weeks before purchase.

Over the last few months, many people have said that they have 'lost' a number of notes etc they made on their trees on this site. Whilst one lives in hope that this was an exception rather than the rule, it does serve as a warning for everyone else. ;-)

Do you only use this site for your tree ?

Family Tree Maker is popular to use at home

I want to keep a record for each ancestor in far more detail than can be achieved by using the format on this site. In a nutshell, for each ancestor I want a separate record of siblings, immediate descendants, immediate ancestors, jobs, all addresses & other interesting facts such as war service etc. I am quite happy using the tree but I would love to be able then to cross reference it to far more detail. Some of my wife's extended family have fascinating histories & it can be very difficult to keep track of soime of the info.

How do others out there do this? Is there a template on another site that can be used? or am I seeking the holy grail?
