Hi Chris,

How right you are, I have spent many happy visits there as well as various other record offices in the London area.
I now live 300 miles away on the edge of the known world and that is the only thing I miss!

Lol Jim, nothing beats a trip to Kew, or anywhere else, and doing things the 'old' way!.

Hi again.

Frederick died 1880. His wife was not shown on his death cert as the Dr at the Infirmary was the informant.
You are quite correct re the appeal for 'widows assistance' on Fred's army papers but no name shown there. How did you find that online? I had to get the copies from Kew.

Many Thanks Potty for having a look at St Mary Magdelene. That was one searched by greenwich L H Centre.
Thanks also for posting the thread to the Durham appeal.
Jim

James, I looked at all the images for St Mary Magdalene for 1860 - some Joneses but none with the correct name or parents names. Something to bear in mind, children were often baptised sometime after birth, sometimes in a "batch" with later siblings.

St Mary Magdalen does have a lot of military baptisms.

To save anyone wasting time, James does have another thread about this family which has census info, etc. I will post the link.

Hi ChristinaS

Josephs mothers name was either Jane as on her marriage cert OR Mary as on later census's. When trying to find the death record for someone with the surname of Jones I have found it is vital to start with the correct Christian name. Jim

ChristinaS Report 19 Jun 2012 08:01

I would guess that Joseph's mother's name was Mary Jane - the same as his sister.

Hi ChristinaS

I have that certificate (and others). Unfortunately, its not the right one.
I have spent some money in the past and have just come back to it. I am now on a fixed income hence the appeal.
Thanks for looking though, regards, Jim

There's this birth registration on freebmd:

Joseph Jones - Jan-Mar 1860 - Lewisham - Vol.1d - Page 711

Me again.
Sorry I mis-spelled Andysmum and the first 'mind' on the line should read 'that'.
Shirley, yours must have come on the board as i sent mine. However, yes that is the family and the point is that in some census mother is Jane in others she is Mary. I want to find her death record but need the right name and am trying not to spend too much getting it.

Regards, Jim

Hi Everyone.

Potty, may I ask if you looked for Joseph Frederick Jones & not just Joseph Jones?

Anysmum, Thanks for that possible lead, I will keep mind in mind. However, there was also a chapel at Fort Victoria on the Isle of Wight where Fred was stationed before going to Woolwich but another child Lydia, was baptised at the parish Church of Yarmouth there so I guess it depends on where they were actually living.

Shirley, Joseph is on the 1861 with family at Hartlepool. I am 99.9% sure he was not born abroad

When I started this on Saturday 16th I started with Hartlepool but changed to Durham on another GR members advice. There may still be something come through on there.

Thank you again everyone. Jim

Andysmum Report 18 Jun 2012 16:54

The "nearest" church to the barracks was almost certainly within the barracks. Most Barracks, Naval Bases and RAF stations had their own places of worship. As it is apparently no longer used by the RA, I would try contacting the Regiment to see if they have their baptism records anywhere.

Potty Report 18 Jun 2012 14:40

James, after following your other thread, I have searched on ancestry for a baptism - St Mary Magdalene images are on there - but with no success. Sorry!

James Report 18 Jun 2012 14:31

Hi,
If someone is going to the Greenwich Local History centre at the Royal Arsenal, may I ask if you would have a look through the Baptism register for churches nearest to the barracks of Royal Artillery ( St Mary Magdalene was the Parish Church of Woolwich) for the baptism of Joseph Frederick Jones in late 1859 or 1860.
'My' Joseph was only called by one name all his life but as his details have not yet been found, I am taking a suggestion from another GR member who has found a J F Jones registered in 4th quarter 1859 at Lewisham (the local register office at that time.
Josephs father was Frederick, in the Coast Brigade of RA and his mother was either Jane or Mary
Many Thanks, Jim
