Pre-1837 birth and baptism records Before the government's registration system was created, evidence of births and/or baptisms (and also marriages and death or burials) was dependent on the events being recorded in the records of the Church of England or in those of other various churches – not all of which maintained such records or all types of those records. Copies of such records are not issued by the General Register Office; but can be obtained from these churches, or from the local or national archive, which usually now keeps the records in original or copy form

If it's the one I think, the certificate shows that it is a copy of a baptism registration, although the seller describes it as you state.

Before birth certificates were available, often people used such a certificate to verify their age.

I think it is signed over a stamp?, so was actually written out after postage stamps were introduced.

I don't have an account on ebay but this item should be reported under the trades discription act

I guess thesort of person that would be looking at this sort of puchase would know what they, like us, were looking at.

Its not the sort of thing that just anyone would buy.

DazedConfused Report 29 Jun 2012 13:37

Reported under Trades Descriptions Act - a bit harsh. Maybe the seller does not know the difference.

EDIT: Have just been onto ebay, via my own account and contacted the seller to advise that he needs to alter his post. It is obviously a Baptism Certificate and not a Birth. Lets just see if it gets amended.

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 29 Jun 2012 14:32

PP, You are correct it is harsh but as you have alerted the seller about his discription of the item You obviously thought it was in breach of the trades discription act

" baptism certificate dated 1816 " so I assume they have already amended it.

Rambling

Rambling Report 29 Jun 2012 17:44

and a little plea...please don't report sellers without giving them a chance to amend....it's very easy to put something in quickly if you're listing a lot without paying due attention...like I did once making a watch chain 3 ft long lol

Rambling

Rambling Report 29 Jun 2012 17:47

Actually the photo very clearly shows the word Baptism...so I doubt anyone would have been misled by it.

DazedConfused

DazedConfused Report 29 Jun 2012 20:03

No Roy I did not think it was contravening the trade descritions act, just kindly pointing out his error.

Personally having looked at the photo, it clearly says Baptism.

If the seller is not interested in Genealogy, I would probably think that to them there is very little difference.

;-)

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 29 Jun 2012 21:46

As i said it may be harsh but bear in mind we do no the difference between a birth and baptism certificate,

Not everyone doing their family tree does, and then their are others who just collect historic documents,

Any of the above could have bought that item believing it to be a birth certificate and that would be a breach of the act,

So just to clarify If i was going to report it i too would have given the seller the chance to amend the description before reporting it using the system provided by ebay

I said "This item should be reported under the trades descriptions act" I never said who i would report it too

PP, You did report the error to the seller and he has changes his description so no harm done
