Is it possible to find out when and why someone went into prison?

It will depend upon what the time period they offended was.

Ancestry has this database which covers 100 years but of course not every court or case are included. It shows the trial date, trial place, offence and sentence. It can be searched by name but unfortunately the personal details given about the individuals is very scant with little to identify one John Smith from another.

Researching:
Don't put off until tomorrow doing what you can do today. If you like doing it today you can do it again tomorrow. Be kind to your children for it is they who will decide which care home you end up in.

Well it was in the early 1900's some time, and has a quite distinctive name, do you know where I can do a look up?

If the name is unusual and you know the area, try searching the newspaper archives.
You can search using credits on GR.

Have you tried googling the name? Sometimes the strangest things are thrown up.

Also try the National Archive site - unlikely. but?

Ask the a main library/archive near to where either the person lived, or where the crime to place, to search their local newspaper archeves.....but first try the online version on here or direct on

http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk
(as Andy suggested)

If you can't get to the area in person, there is probably going to be a charge per 30 mins.
