That's a thought---I'll have a rummage around later. Is there a way of finding the "big" house that 36 Lancaster Mews belonged to and thus to the occupants who might have been the employers?. I have a very vague recollection of her "lady"being a Countess, but that's probably hogwash! Have got to go off-line now,but many thanks for all the help.

Darn that puts that one out of the running then.

Have tried all sorts of permutations for Margaret even just searching on surname but just not picking her up.

Some employers though did give their servants different names if there were others with the same christian name in the household

Alison

Alison Report 8 Jul 2012 18:05

My aunt, Margaret Mildred Ellis( or Ettie) Grey Upshall was born Jan/Mar1894 at Castle Ward, Northumberland, father Henry James Upshall b. 1868 in Hazelbury Bryan, Dorset. She married Robert Coleby,a soldier on active service, aged 28, on Dec 10th at Christ Church, Lancaster Gate . His father is named as Henry Coleby. Both fathers gave their profession as "Farmer"---I know this can mean agricultural labourer!
I only knew them as Margey and Bob.
My mother used to tell me that Margey had worked as nursemaid/nanny in an aristocratic family and that her former employer used to send her parcels of beautiful hand-me -down children's clothes for her two daughters, Joan and Audrey, born only 10 months apart.
I've looked in the censuses for 1891.1901 and 1911,but can't find her and feel quite frustrated. Am I barking up wrong trees? Any help would be much appreciated,
Alison
