The GRO index can be found (partly) transcribed at http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
However, one can purchase BMD.certs from the local office too, and some of these have online indexes - see:
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd
Of particular note is http://www.northeastbmd.org.uk/

The index for NuT covers B thru 1870 and M thru 1900.
Part of Longbenton parish was initially in Tynemouth RD, but was transferred to Newcastle RD.
Since Newcastle now holds all those registers, the local index covers those too.

Since the local index indexes marrs by entry #, rather than page #, it's possible to say who wed whom, and in what church, even pre 1912.

The local index for births gives the subdistrict where the birth was rego'ed, but to see this one needs to click on the application form.
