You can view England & Wales National Probate Calendar (Wills & Administration) 1858-1966 on Ancestry.

The grant of Probate (or Administration) can take as long as it takes ;-)

Most are issued within a couple of months, but other more complex ones could be years.

Some Estates end up on the bona vacantia list if there isn't a Will and there are no known heirs. I *think* they stay there for 30 years before the value of the Estate is absorbed by the Treasury.

Once Probate or Administration is granted, they are in the Public domain and anyone can purchase a copy.

You need form PA1S on this link. They will make a search on your behalf

The cost is currently £6

can anyone tell me, is there a point in time when a will can become public knowledge, ie how long after a person has died and the estate settled.

And how would you go about applying for a copy.

many thanks
