I think the name "Ballyrhyn" might well be BEILI ...

Beilicelyn and Beili-glas can be seen in the Myddfai area on a modern OS map.

Thanks very much Reggie for the etymology of Tan yr allt and the link. Knowing the meaning of property names is helpful. When I googled Tanyrallt I got hits for what looks like a nursing home in Snowdonia. So that makes sense maybe.

I don't suppose you know of the local maps that the census takers followed showing these properties?

Look for a Welsh/English dictionary online


Don't make the mistake of assuming that the location names are always of individual properties.

Looking at the 1841 & 1851 census results the place of residence is often given. Eg one of my ancestors lived in Tannyrallt in the Myddfai (Mothvey) area of Carmarthenshire. But Tannyralt (Dannyralt, Tan-yr-allt) can be found in lots of places. Eg. there's another in the Conwil Caio area. Does it have some meaning like Hill View or Buena Vista etc? Another property name is Ballyrhyn. Is there a directory which gives these names and meanings?They're hard to track because of the numerous spelling variants.
