It's not the usual abbreviation for Jonathan, that is Jon.

It is also a name in its own right. The J is a relic of the days when I and J were interchangeable, and it can also be spelt Ino and is pronounced "Eeno", whichever way it is spelt.

I have also seen the female version, spelt Ina, but so far, not Jna.

My g/g/grandfather John is in parish records as Johannis
