Can anyone tell me how I can find my fathers war record if I do not have his service number? He was in B Troop 44 Commando - WW2

You have to apply for them, nothing online only available to NOK

Have a read through this link, whilst his service number would be a bonus,if you have other sufficient details shouldn't be a problem.

Can take as long as 9 months to get them,

If your mother is not alive......the records will cost £30.00

I have looked on www. war records.co but fathers name doesn't appear although many with the same name are listed, does anyone know if I have to look elsewhere as he was with the Royal Marines Special Boat Service. I am doing my best to find his service number as I realise this will be of more help in locating his records.
I did realise there is a cost involved but thanks for telling me how much Reggie.

Write to the MOD in the link that George gave, please; that is what I did when applying for my father's service records.

The site www.forces-war-records.co.uk does have some military records but they are NOT personnel service records

personnel service records for WW2 are held by the MOD

they are not online or open to the general public

Lots of WW2 service numbers appear on birth certificates of any children they may have had while serving.

Also if they married during that time it can be on a marriage certificate.

Thanks Kay, I have just had a look at the marriage certificate but he had left the marines by then so the ray of hope you offered has been crushed, but thank you anyway it was well worth finding the certificate out to look.
