I know you must think I am stupid but I have forgotten how to scan a photo it has been such a long time can anyone please help thank you Margaret

Place the photo on the bed of your scanner, at the top right, and follow the on-screen instructions, depending on whether you wish to save, print, or e-mail the result.

It is difficult to be more precise, as all makes have slightly different operating procedures.......mine is a Canon
