Hi
Please can anyone tell me if the following Bulgarian surnames are linked. Am I right in thinking that there are male and female versions of a surname??

Boychev (I dont know if this is a male or female) first name is Yasen
Boyanovska (this is a female)

If two people in the household had these two surnames could they be related?

I don't think they are the male and female versions of the same name.
Boychev (masc.) would more likely be Boycheva/Boychevska in the female. Boyanovska looks more like the female version of Boyanov.

I did study Russian years ago and I don't think Bulgarian rules would be much different.

My wife is Bulgarian so we could maybe help. Yasen Boychev would be a man’s name. A woman may have the name Boyanovska as patronym or surname. Those 2 names give no indication whether they are related or not. The wikipedia article explains the changing fashions in giving surnames and it is important to be clear that an unmarried person’s surname may not be identical with their father’s surname.
