Having trouble with the brnach of my family tree that has a double barrelled surname. Does anyone have any ideas or know of any websites that specialise in this area of family tree research?

Hello Sarah - I've never personally heard of such a site, I think it's more a case of knowing how to manipulate the search facilities on the most commonly used sites.

Do you want to give us an example of what you're trying to find?

If its records your searching then try entering only the later part of the surname then try just the former part of the surname
(one size does not fit all)

Roy

Added; An example for you

David Lloyd-George, 1st Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor ex prime minister born 17 January 1863

His birth was registered as David Lloyd George but you will find him on the index as surname George his family name is Lloyd-GEORGE fathers name William George mother was Elizabeth George maiden name Lloyd

Births Mar 1863
GEORGE David Lloyd Chorlton 8c 571

although registered as a single surname on the index it can create the problem of identifying the correct birth as shown above and even the transcribers cannot agree their are to post-ems for his birth contradicting each other

some are on the index as double barreled but not all

also freebmd, search the name Gillespie it returns results for Gillespie

repeat the search using Phonetic search surnames and it will return results including, eg, Gillespie-brown

pm from Sarah:

"Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me.

The surname I am looking for is Colbourne-West. I can only find my maternal Grand-Father and maternal Great Grand-Father.

Any help would be appreciated"

Explained that we'll need first names and birth details and to put the info on here.

They seem to be centered in Bath.
Marriages Sep 1913
Clarke Geraldine Colborne-West Bath 5c 1155
Colborne-West Albert H Clarke Bath 5c 1155
West Albert H C Clarke Bath 5c 1155

There is something "off" about this couple as they seem to appear on the census as West:
Marriages Dec 1884
Colbourne Albert Henry Bath 5c 1169
Padfield Martha Ann Bath 5c 1169

I think I have the right people!!!

Maureen

Edit:
centered? oh who cares
