Lorraine

Lorraine Report 23 Aug 2012 12:53

Hi am trying to find information about the parents of Peter Stark born 1907 supposedly in Metz, France but have been unable to find out anything about them apart from what I have been told by his wife who got the information from him.

The information I have so:

Peter Stark born 1907 in Metz, France.

His father also called Peter Stark possibly born in Germany.

His Mother Margarete or Margaret born in Metz, France

His brother Ludwich or Ludwig born in Metz France

His sister Maria born in Metz, France

His father was a watchmaker who trained at Glashutte factory in Germany

I have contacted Glashutte but have had no reply.

He came to England & arrived at Full Sutton from Austria & worked as a Labourer until he was able to continue working as a Watchmaker. He worked for the Royal Observatory repairing Chronometers .

As I can't find anything about his family I wondered if he changed his name on arrival to England.

Any ideas as to where I can try next.

Thanks

Had a look around but can't find anything obvious, my thought would be that he would have been Pierre Starck... the Starck surname does seem to have some base in the Alsace Lorraine district, which was contested between Germany and France WW1/2

The surname occurs here , but early 1800s so not a help but may be of interest

Stark is almost certainly an anglicised version of his name.

Did he take British nationality?

If so, naturalization papers might prove helpful.

Do you know when he moved to the UK?

Was he alone?

Reggie

He never took British Nationality so there won't be any naturalization papers. He was still reporting to the Police Station in the 50's. He came over alone .

Hullo Lorraine

On ancestry.fr I have found a tree where there is a Peter Stark :
Peter Stark
Birth : 1907 - Moselle, France
Death : 1982 - Buckfastleigh, Devon, England (Angleterre)
Mariage : 1954 - Yorkshire, England (Angleterre)
Spouse : Peggy Crocker

His parents are Peter and Margarete

But Lorraine you may know this tree – the person building it has 2 trees going, The Stark Tree (101 people) and the other is the Boulton family (292 people).
The tree owner is Goldenshot1 - Totnes, Devon, Angleterre

Hope this can help you,
Catherine
