I'd never hear of 'Nurse Waddingham'! Had to do a google search, as you do. Not a nice woman though was she.
Interesting for me that she wasn't executed in London (as portrayed in film 'Pierrepoint') but Winson Green prison B'ham, just round the corner from where I work - as a nurse!! Typical, you would think London was the only place in England sometimes. Maybe it was appropriate to distort her history though as she told several porkies in her lifetime!

Would not believe half the information given on Marriage certificates

My grandmother Baptised Mary Ellen, marriage 1 Nellie Josephine marriage 2 Nellie. On first marriage her father is a Malster on 2nd he is a Policeman (deceased on both)

Many people will also 'posh' up their own or their fathers occupations.

I have also come across 1 ancestor who was illegitimate and on her marriage certificate has put a name in their and stated her father was a surgeon.

There were no checks made so you could say what you liked when asked for information for the certificate.

Have even found some WW1 records with some interesting civilian occupations, which bear little resemblance to what they really did.

If you are lucky enough to find his or her army papers they have the work they did on the enlistment usually.

On my parents' marriage certificate (1941), my father's occupation is given as "Fitter, RAF" . It lists his home address.

One of mine dated 1943 was in Bradford, Yorks. and both of the couple were in the Army there.
It shows their ranks,service numbers, section of the Army and their actual job within that.
It also shows their separate home addresses in the south of England.

It would show his Rank, number and maybe what he did.

If the man was in the army I don't think his civilian occupation would be mentioned as the certificate records his occupation at the time of the marriage - which will be a soldier.

Can anyone tell me if the "occupation" of a man in the second world war was recorded on his marriage certificate as his rank in the army or did they record his civvy street profession?
