Please could anyone give me any information on how to find the age of an ancestor at death if no date of birth or age is given on the record. I have been looking at Wantage, Berkshire records 1860 onward for 10 years and all ages seem to be at 0. At first I thought my ancestor had lost quite a few children at birth!! It seems an expense if certificates have to be sent for for all children. Hope to hear

Before 1866 the deceased's age was not recorded in the index. Genes records unfortunately cannot cope with that so it indicates age as "0" when no age is indicated on the index.

With regards to discovering the age of your ancestor at death the most reliable method is to work their age forward from whatever it was on the last census record on which you found them. Please be aware however that for numerous reasons a persons age recorded on a census may not have been 100% accurate.

Researching:
Don't put off until tomorrow doing what you can do today. If you like doing it today you can do it again tomorrow. Be kind to your children for it is they who will decide which care home you end up in.

freebmd records ages at death from 1866..............as does Ancestry

If this person was your ancestor he/she must have been an adult
