Hi - I am looking at the marriage records on both Ancestry and Genes Reunited for Benjamin R Pucill - Married in 1947 in Hendon, his spouse is recorded in the original record as Mearing or Tanser. You can see the record here http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/records/image/ebmdmarriageindexedimage/75344908?searchhistorykey=40645657&surname=pucill&forename=benjamin%20r

Does anyone know why there would be two surnames??

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Katie

her second marriage to pucill has been registered twice under both names Marriages Dec 1947 (>99%)
Mearing Catherine M Pucill Hendon 5e 1242
Pucill Benjamin R Mearing Hendon 5e 1242
Pucill Benjamin R Tanser Hendon 5e 1242

i wonder if her name was hyphenated , or did she get devorced and it didnt come through on time , and that why she married the same man twice pehaps the marriages when on two different days in the same 1/4 you would need to get the marriage cert(s) clear this up

Ok .......I,ve had this and was it a long story so will put some here to see if it helps

great granny married a man(man x) who died 9 months later great granny had a child a year later! so 19months in total this child was registered Williams (surname) BUT that child then married 32 years later and used man x surname with williams

That child had 3 children all girls and added BOTH names again to her middle childs giving a registation just like yours

Good Luck ....I,m still looking for the going of both these men!!!!!

if a marriage shows on the GRO index as spouse surname = Mearing or Tanser on freebmd this is transcribed as shown above

ie on 2 separate lines as there is no facility on freebmd for showing both surnames on the same line, so only 1 marriage took place for your Catherine

if it was 2 separate marriage the page number would be different for the 2nd entry and Catherine would be shown twice

if you click on the ? next to the freebmd entry you will see the comment that is also transcribed in these cases - in this case

#COMMENT Entry reads Mearing or Tanser for spouse

if you had the certificate it would say Catherine "formerly Tanser late Mearing"

According to a Public Family Tree on ancestry

Catherine Maude Tanser married Edward George Mearing on 26 September 1931.

The address for him is given as 245 Watling Avenue, Burnt Oak, Edgeware

Her address is given as 15 Gervaise Road, Burnt Oak

She was aged 21, and Edward was also 21.

There seems to be one child born, in 1937.
