Have you tried the cemetery at Chingford Mount?

My great grandad died in Brentwood but is still buried in Chingford

The lady at the cemetery there was really helpful gave me copies of all the papers and a map where the (unmarked) grave is

If the man was, as is suggested, estranged from his immediate family, the likelihood of there being a notice in the paper must be minimal.

Even in 'normal' circumstances, only a tiny proportion of deaths is ever announced in the local paper

In a family grave maybe? Have you tried the churches local to where he lived? Cx

Why do you think that he was no longer in contact with his wife and family?. -jl

Janet Report 14 Oct 2012 14:20

Have you tried the local library as his obituary would probably have appeared in the local newspaper with the details of where the funeral was to be held-jl

Have you contacted the bereavement services department at the local councils?
I have found their staff very helpful .

In either case, his name would be in the cemetery records.
These records likely wouldn't identify the grave as a paupers or otherwise.

Here's a paupers grave from a cemetery with online records - Wigan (Lower Ince):

One can guess it's a pauper's grave from the number of distinct surnames buried in the same grave in a short period of time.
Here there were 2 periods - 4 burials in 23-24/7/1879 and 16 burials in 24/9-8/10/1884 - they weren't all unrelated - there's a pair of Pepper twins died aged 5 wks.

Have you tried to contact a local family history society to talk to someone with more knowledge of your area, and if TB patients had a special section, even?

Poirot Report 14 Oct 2012 08:29

I know the date of death - what the person died from - I have copy of death certificate. What I do not know and finding impossible to find out is where the person is buried.
I have searched all sites - possible that I do not know fully how to use them - but searched to the best of my ability.
I even know that the person was interred in Essex
He died in 1936 in Tendering Essex in a hospital TB - his home address on certificate was given as Chingford.
If he was buried in pauper grave circumstances would his name appear on a burial site?
If that is the case then I think my search has come to an end - if Icannot find a paid for burial then Pauper Grave is my next best guess.
He had family but only step sisters and brothers and unsure how close they were. He did have a living wife and children but possibly had not had contact with them for many years.
Would the wife have been contacted ( if indeed she was contactable) the person who registered the death is the husband of one of the step sisters.
