John does have another thread, but its about James Grice b 1842 Wold Newton.

Although in this current thread may be related, it is not a duplicate as John is looking for only one person in a specific census

Must admit I am struggling on Ancestry too! Though we did find the other Grice family. So FMP is prob. the right way to go.

Can anyone make out address 1871 on Ancestry? On the off-chance they were there. 1891 was Norman Rd and they aren't there as far as I can tell.

Address in 1871 that Susan posted looks like Church Street, Kirkby and transcribed accordingly on FMP:

It's this one MarieCeleste - I think! A few Ancestry trees have this family, but nobody seems to have them 1881.

Right! The address is very clear on FMP (bearing in mind they've done the old fashioned think of substituting an "f" for one of the "s"

I think neither Ancestry nor FMP transcribed 1881, but they both just used the pre-existing LDS FS transcription.

The only other thing I can think of - following the idea of looking at addresses - is to get nearest birth cert to 1881 census, i.e. William's, but unfortunately there are two equally likely births!

Births Dec 1880 (>99%)
GRICE William Prescot 8b 713
Births Mar 1881)
GRICE William Prescot 8b 788

I would be tempted to say it was the 1881 one

Baptisms: 27 Mar 1881 St Nicholas, Sutton, Lancashire, England
William Grice - Son of William Grice & Mary Ann
Abode: Sutton
Occupation: Labourer
Baptised by: George Tripp
Register: Baptisms 1871 - 1887, Page 176, Entry 1401
Source: LDS Film 1657568

However in 1891 they were living in Normans Rd which does not seem to appear on FMP address search in 1881. Nor can I find some others who were also living in that road in 1891

SuCal Report 30 Oct 2012 02:38

Marriage of Elizabeth Grice Spinster of Sutton (Father William) to John Dickinson on 5/9/1891 at St Nicholas Sutton . Fits with a baptism record also same church 12/2/1871 Abode Sutton -parents William (Labourer) and Mary .

Also baptisms for Alice 1/6/1873,Martha 9/9/1877,Mary 24/8/1879,William 27/3/1881 (as previous post),Sarah 16/9/1883,James 31/10/1886,Thomas 18/12/1887 and Ellen 15/2/1891 - all fit with census mentioned above and all are at St Nicholas Sutton and abode is given as Sutton so they must be there somewhere in 1881 .

All baptisms cross ref with Lancs birth register for appropriate years and any one of Alice, Martha Sarah Thomas or Ellen would probably be good risk for an actual cert to get actual address as not another child same name same year in St Helens.
