Please could advise me how to find the other halves when I am looking up a marriage. Seems I can only find one half of the partnership, ie the husbands and the place but not the wives? This seems to be pre 1911/1913 and the same with births, can't find the mother's maiden name only the childs name and place of birth?

Thank you : )

On FreeBMD click on the page number to get the other names then go to the following census to find first name of wife. You can usually find the spouse's name that way.

The mother's maiden name for births was only shown from 4th quarter 1911 (might be 1912) - unfortunately before then you have to buy the certificate.

For marriages prior to 1912, find the record relating to one of the parties - on freebmd, click on the page number which if transcibed correctly should then show the other people recorded on that page eg from freebmd

Marriages Mar 1910 (>99%)
Allen John Bury 8c 865 ...... 865 is the page number

Clicking on the page number gives
Marriages Mar 1910 (>99%)
Allen John Bury 8c 865
BROUGHTON Alice Bury 8c 865
Monk Richard Bury 8c 865
Pessol Ada Ellen Bury 8c 865

So John Allen married either Alice Boughton or Ada Ellen Pessol.

You'd have to search the next available census, in this case 1911 in turn for a John Allen with Alice or Ada.

The same record on GR -
John Allen
Year of Marriage 1910
Quarter of Marriage Jan-Feb-Mar
Registration District Bury
Registration County Lancashire
Spouse's Surname Only available for records after 1912
Volume Number 8C
Volume Page 865

John Allen married one of the people below:

Alice BROUGHTON
Ada Ellen PESSOL
Richard MONK.....nah!

For births before 1911 try to find the child in the 1911 census where you should find the parents names. You can then look on FreeBMD for a marriage for the father's name to a spouse with the first name of the mother that is given on the census.

If you can't find it that way then you may just have to buy the birth certificate for the child to find the parent's full names.

where are you researching Fiona?

There are a few local free sites such as the online parish clerks which have the exact partner for a marriage or mmn for a birth

eg lancashirebmd.org.uk
