I also have one in 2 names - which says Isabella Jane Donnelly (otherwise Hill) - she was married to Hill - as far as I can see never married Donnelly - her birth cert says Isabella - almost everything else I have for her shows as "Jane" - she is registered under both surnames at death.

Thankyou ladies :-)

DazedConfused, that is interesting. In this case there were no children of the first marriage, and one( I found last night) to the second.

One possible reason for this is 2 sets of children

1st lot from a first marriage
2nd from a 2nd marriage

And both sets register the death of mother in the name she had when their mother.

This is often due to a rift following the 2nd marraige which was not approved of!!!

I have two but the one I can find now is not a different surname but a change of name

Albert Edward Houghton
Birth 29 Sep 1914 in Camberwell, London, Surrey, England
Death 22 May 1954 in London City
Jun 1954 London City 5d 126

John William Houghton Jun 1954 London City 5d 126

No idea why he changed his name after marrying his second wife.

It is unusual Rose and I have only come across it once.

I ordered this death certificate..................

Name: Emily Ella M Newlands
Birth Date: 10 May 1904
Date of Registration: Oct 1996
Age at Death: 92
Registration District: South Gloucester
Register Number: B3
District and Subdistrict: 3041B
Entry number: 77

but it arrived with surname BERRY.

Name: Emily Ella M Berry
Birth Date: 10 May 1904
Date of Registration: Oct 1996
Age at Death: 92
Registration District: South Gloucester
Register Number: B3
District and Subdistrict: 3041B
Entry number: 77

Widow Emily NEWLANDS had remarried, but helpfully the informant of her death had mentioned her previous married name and so it had been indexed under both.
