Hi
that is Elizabeth and Emily, was hoping there would be a William who died after 1882, that I kept missing, so now I haven't a clue who their dad was.
thank you for your help

Could just be coincidence - found the following, which shows a burial in the parish of Calverley - in the county of York: Holy Trinity, Idle

1st October 1874 - William Raistrick - aged 41

You would need to order the birth certificates of Elizabeth and Emily to see who is registered at the father! And possibly order the death certificate for William,

Lynne

MarieCeleste Report 18 Sep 2013 23:54

The 1881 census shows Phebe at Thackley End, that was also their address in 1871.

Publication:Leeds Times
Publication date:Saturday 03 October 1874

Article text: DEATHS - BRADFORD
September 28, aged 40. William Raistrick of Thackley End, Idle.

It's quite possible that if you ordered the birth certificates for Emily and Elizabeth that William could possibly still be shown as their father. When a widow had illegitimate children she seemed to have been afforded more respect than a single woman.

SylviaInCanada Report 19 Sep 2013 01:25

When a married woman had a child it was automatically assumed that her husband was the father, unless she declared otherwise .................. and the husband's surname was given to the child, even if he had been dead for years.

The longest gap I've found so far was a child born 10 years after the husband had died.
