can anyone tell me a way to find records of prisoners and their crime i have looked in the newspapers.i have been searching for my grandfather Thomas jessop1877 for a long time i found my father with his family in lincs t without his dad i then found found Thomas in the 1911 census in Wakefield prison but i cant find why he is in prison nor can i find the offense committed if any one has any ideas i would be most grateful

Ancestry does have this database but not for anything near to 1911

Find my Past does have more recent records...but not seeing anything for him

Have you looked in local papers? if you were relying on the British Newspaper Archive, the relevant local paper may not yet be included.

Try contacting West Yorks Archives which covers Wakefield, and Lincs Archives. It rather depends where the crime was committed. You might find reference to a magistrates hearing before he was sent to the Quarter Sessions if the cirme warranted it.

I came across posting on another site dated Dec 2012 they were also searching details of Wakefield Prisoners.

Reply received was to contact the West Yorkshire Archieve Service in Wakefield direct as they too had been looking for 1911 records of inmates and found them helpful.
Google as above for times and phone number.
