yes you could be right the only thing i am sure about my grand father was a only child and my great grand mother remarried in 1901 all my tree could be miles out before them

Having read the previous thread, I'm rather glad I didn't start to explore the James Gunn who died in Kingston reg, Surrey!

Malcolm, as the MC you have states that James the father was a carpenter, could you have latched on to that James as a 'best fit' rather than any other sources?

The William Samuel Gunn who was born and died in 1862 in Great Yarmouth is obviously not the same as the Samuel Gunn who died in Gravesend, Kent in 1892.

Which James Gunn do you believe to be Samuel's father?

hi his fathers name was James Gunn a carpenter by trade who died 1892 as did Samuel, Samuels son James died at sea in 1898 ship went down in a storm leaving an only son James my Grand Father. the grey area lies with Samuel Gunn or William Samuel Gunn are they the same person?

As you seem to be back-tracking from the Samuel Gunn who died in Gravesend - have you bought his 2nd (only?)marriage certificate to see if he named his father?

William Samuel Gunn won't have a birth certificate as he was born before July 1837. Until 1876 (ish) there were no penalties for not registering a birth.

As you have now mentioned a Samuel Gunn, is William Samuel Gunn a direct ancestor, or part of the extended family?

the problem i have, i have a Samuel Gunn in my tree with no birth registered but found on censes to be born in Guisbourgh [could he be William Samuel] contacted the register office and they cannot find any registration, i have found out he had family down in Suffolk and Kent, he died in Gravesend in 1892
