To summarise, in the Summons Court at the Nottingham Guild Hall, before Mr T Gascoigne and Mr G Wigley, Eliza Leatherhead of 9, Abinger Street pleaded guilty to the wilful neglect of her four children, Amy, Eliza, George and Mary, all under the age of 16 years, in a manner likely to cause them unnecessary suffering or injury to health.

P.C. Wild described the rooms at the defendant's house. He found the bedding and children were infested with vermin, and the latter had sores on their bodies. It was because of a complaint by the husband that he had visited the house.

DR H Owen Taylor said the children Amy, Eliza and George had been sadly neglected. From the appearance of the downstairs room it was not a case of poverty, but one simply of neglect.

The husband said he has recently come out of hospital . His wife was frequently in an intoxicated state and had sold many things from the house in order to get drunk.

P C Wild was recalled and said when he went to the house last night he found the defendant drunk.

The Chairman said the defendant would have to go to prison for a month, to give her a chance to get sober.
