GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 22 May 2014 21:43

So Maud is on 1881 with Sophia and Arthur

Looks as if Sophia died in 1887

Why didn't you say you wanted the census's when you asked for the marriages?

I had to check the census to make sure I gave you the correct marriage

jax - since it's Hull, checking the census was a bit unnecessary.

FreeBMD usually doesn't say who wed whom pre-1912, e.g.:

Marriages Dec 1889 (>99%)
Hearson Arthur Sculcoates 9d 429
Johnson Mary Ann Sculcoates 9d 429
SCOTT Henry Padget Sculcoates 9d 429
Thistleton Salome Sculcoates 9d 429

However, this situation can usually be resolved if there is a local index online - see http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd
For Hull, we want http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/

Although you might find a transcription online for a C of E church marr (e.g., at FS), you won't find transcriptions of rego office marrs online.

If you ever go to the records office, or browse thru some unindexed images at FS, then knowing the church e.g., St Barnabas and the local ref # e.g., HBA/1/204 is very useful - the ref # identifies the church as St Barnabus (usually in some coded form - HBA here), the register # i.e. her it's the 1st official register, and either the entry # or the page # - for marrs, it's usually the entry # which is how the local index can match up the 2 names on the same entry. (there are 500 entries in a rego spread over 100 pages for Bs & Ds, and 250 pp for Ms).

I don't see how looking at the census was unnecessary.....there were more than one marriage for these names and they were not born Hull or Yorkshire..... so how would I know to look for Yorkshire marriages for them without having somesort of clue that they moved there at some point?

Take it these Hearsons are connected to the Clara Hearson mentioned on the other thread about John B Smith?
