Wanting to know how do i find more information on a death of Alice Freer died 19 feb 1858 in Swindon Wiltshire, by Accidental burn. The Corroner was William Burt Whitmarsh of Chippenham. I want to know if it was a house fire. or what sort of burn.
And if records are available to sight from Coroner courts.
Ive found all i want to know on Whitmarsh.

It is highly unlikely that any coroners records survive from that far back. They never had a requirements to keep records longer than a few years.

Your best bet will be the local newspapers. The report will appear either on the day or day after the inquest. And do not be surprised to find it reported in papers much farther away. An ancestor of mine died in London (he was from Bristol) and the only paper I found it in was in Yorkshire!

Thanks: I had looked in the wiltshire papers that i could find this morning. With no luck. Didnt think to go further afield.
Jan Smith: thank you, i wrote and got a response with in 2 hours, there records dont start till 1936! They sujest searching papers at 30 pound a hour..... dont think its worth that much. like thats a days wages for me.!!!!
(in Australia we have trove and its free to search)

Not sure when the Wiltshire times was 1st published but I live in Wiltshire and will try and see if I can find out. It may not be for a couple of weeks but will post back on here to let you know.

you can search for free, and you will see the first 2 or 3 lines of the article.

But it will at least let you see whether there are any reports on your ancestor.

Then you can decide whether to take out a short subscription or buy credits


GR also carries the British Newspapers Archives ............... and you could search them on here and see the same 2 or 3 lines ................ and then make the same decision to buy credits

As someone who had until quite recently full FindMyPast membership, I found that I would often get no results on FMP, but when searching the newpaper archives direct I would get results.

thanks. I did try some of the wiltshire newspapers, i think they were every couple days by the dates. I paper pulled up my Jonathan Freer going to court, and i paid for it with credits on GR and got to veiw it properly. i searched till mid march, but i didnt find anything. But i didnt go further afield yet. However i was stoked to find him in court.... lol. just to see their name in the paper makes them more human, Thanks All
