In your situation, I would contact the local registrar's office for Bingham area and explain the situation.
I have found most local office staff can be really helpful when I've been trying to buy the correct certificate.

From the National Burial Index, a James Hickling, infant, was buried on 14 August 1840 at St Lukes, Hickling, Notts.

thats my family potty

so was wondering if the james hickling born 1840 was to this john and sarah

i dont relly want to waste money as there is alot of cert that i want

Have you looked at the image for the birth ref? There are two James Hicklings on there with the same page and volume no.

i have looked for a baptism have found 2 of his siblings but not him

but that would not give me his mothers maiden name

i didnt have the above info chris thank you

the birth you want may not have been registered; registering a birth wasn't compulsory in the 1840s. Have you tried looking for a baptism?

If you put in the GRO reference correctly then they will be able to issue a certificate and will charge you for it.

I am not sure whether they check the parents names, if supplied, from the records before issuing the certificate. If they do then that would save getting a wrong certificate and being charged.

You don't need to give any parents names. You use the GRO ref in the boxes where it's asked for but you must tick the box that asks if the GRO ref is known .

All you need then is say its a birth cert .the name as listed on the GRO record . Tick the box that asks if the GRO ref is known then fill in the ref in the boxes where asked for

the birth cert i was going to ordered was for

james hickling 1840 nottinghamshire [bingham ]

my james was born 1842 the above was his brother that died but cant find a james hickling 1842

trying to find his mothers maiden name
his parents were john hickling and sarah

james and john were born cotgrave nottingham

and looking at the census his mother sarah was born in grimsby

have found a marriage for

john hickling and sarah foulds in shelford nottingham
but dont know if its the right one or not

The problem might be that at least one of the parents was known by another name.
eg.My ancestor was registered at birth as Silvey.
The birth certificates of her children,which I have bought so far name her as Jane.
She was baptised and given the name Jane Sylvia, so it would be difficult to predict which name would be used on an official form.



Do you need help to decide on which certificate to order?
If so, post a few details and we'll take a look.

If you are looking to have birth certificate from England or Wales you will need the GRO index information for them to find it.
This gives information as follows for a sample

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

If they can't issue the certificate then you get your money back.

If it is not the person you expect then you won't get it back.

If the information on the certificate isn't 'exactly' the same as you gave, they won't issue the certificate.

Since the rules changed, I'm not sure if you get a refund.

You could give them a ring

hi all

never sent off for a birth cert before
so if i put on the form fathers full name and mothers first name would they give me my money back if it was the wrong one
