Gedcom file how best to use it

As Potty has said, you have to have a tree (your own) either on a site such as Ancestry or here on Genes, which you can then convert into a GEDCOM file which is downloaded to your computer, and you can then upload that file to another tree on another site.

ie I had a tree on here, but wanted to also have a tree in my Ancestry account, So I downloaded by tree on here as a GEDCOM file, then uploaded that GEDCOM file to a tree I created within my Ancestry account.

As for the descrepancies, this is not a fault with the GEDCOM. GEDCOM files were created by the Mormon church for their own use to transfer trees within their own research centres. The Genealogical community found that they could use this system as well, but it is not 100% compatible with all systems, so some errors will occur.

I know when I transferred by tree, I lost about 10 people, and it created a couple of doubles. But for ease of use, it is a great tool.

Not quite sure what you mean, Fiona. A gedcom file is a data file that is used to transfer a tree from one site to another or between genealogy programs (eg Family Tree Maker).

If you have a tree on here and you want to put it on Ancestry, you can download a gedcom file (Click on Family Trees and then click on Export Gedgom). The file will be emailed to you. On Ancestry, click on Family Trees and then click on Import Gedcom.

There may be some descrepancies between what is uploaded as different sites and different genealogy sites work in different ways.

Can anyone out there let me know of any good sites they've used to download a gedcom file so I can put it on Ancestry?
Keep looking at various websites and the reviews aren't too fab on many sites
