FMP - or Ancestry

Both are sites for which one has to pay

But .....no records are on line after 2008

How do you know the location, if you don't know the year?

What is the reason for seeking such recent info?

Thank you

Was told location but said about 10 years & i have searched back 2004 & cant find online.

As trying to help a friend whose dad has just died in last month & he had different partner who is saying they were married but her dad always told her he wasnt, so she would just like to know either way.

If your friend believes it to be a church, you/they could contact them.

If not, do the same for the local register office. The RO will probably make a charge, but might be happy to give you a yes/no answer. If one is found you'd definitely be asked to pay for a copy of the certificate, if that's what's wanted. They'd be sent copies of marriages carried out in a Church anyway.

Its vital to find out the fathers marital status as legal spouses don't (normally) have to pay Inheritance Tax. If they weren't married and he didn't leave a Will, his children have a claim against the Estate.

The above advice only works for England & Wales.

Anna - So if it were 11 years, you'll have missed it.

In case the marriage you're looking for should happen to be in Scotland:

Scottish marriages up to 2013 can be searched for online at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

You'd have to register, and buy credits.

Did the "wife" register his death? If so get a copy of the death certificate and see if that throws any light on his status............just a thought!

Or is there going to be an inquest - that could throw up some more info?

Or did he have a private pension (ie not state) - the provider would know if he had a wife who would get a spouses pension - they'd need a marriage cert or proof of co-habitation! Although it would be difficult if not impossible for them to give out information.

Just a thought -

When you searched for the marriage, did you do it in both her and his surnames? If she had been married before, it could have screwed the results.

Try again with just his name both including and omitting any middle names/initials.
