I would think that if your mother lived as "man and wife" with your father for many years then she would probably have preferred her death to be registered in his name anyway.

My in-laws were not married (which we only found out when I started doing our family history and after they were both dead) but my mother-in-law was always known by his surname and my husband and his brother's births are both recorded as if the parents were married.

I'm sure that is what they both wanted and we don't feel the need to to alter anything now.

The reason they were not married was that my father-in-law was married in the 1920's to someone else and when the marriage broke down it was far too expensive and difficult in those days to get a divorce so they both just went on to live with another partner.

You can call yourself by any name you choose as long as it is not to defraud anyone so it really doesn't matter that the name on the death certificate is "wrong" if that is the name she used.

If you want to give your mother's name and date of birth someone might be able to help find her birth entry for you.

Thank you for that link.
It has always bothered me that my aunt's death was incorrectly reported. Although I realised within a week or two of that date and phoned the registrar where it had been logged, it was not corrected.
I will see about getting a note added to correct her name.

As with all Births, Deaths and Marriages the information the information is only as accurate as that which is know to the informants.

Even my mums Death cert is wrong. I gave the wrong dob.

Mum died in St. Thomas' which although in an SE1 postcode (Southwark) comes under Lambeth. So as I did not know this at the time, I went to Soutwark Town Hall to register only to be told I had to go to Brixton. By the time I got there I was all a fluster (this was in the days before you had to book an appointment!!).

You cant change a death certificate once it has been issued but you can have a note put on the entry

I have my mothers death certificate stating that she was the widow of my father, which is untrue as they were never married. She was however the widow of another man but I am unable to find records of my mothers birth, as I don't know the christian names of her parents, neither can I find the marriage certificate to this other man. I do have census records for my mum and her husband. My brother and mums partner gave the information to the registrar about her death, and I thiink my brother thought that our parents were married.She was known by my fathers surname eventually, which she used for the rest of her life, and there are census records showing this. My brother is unaware that our fathers name is not on his birth certificate, nor is it on my other brothers certificate who died at 10 months of age, my mothers married name is on them.... presumably my dad was not present when the births were registered. However both my sister and I have his name on our certificates, with my mothers married name. My parents seperated when I was about 8 years of age. How can I correct this and what would it cost ?
