Thanks so much Glitterbaby -

Given this information, I do not believe they are my ancestors. I know that John was a Tube worker, not a farmer and They went on to have three children.

ScotlandsPeople website has provided me with John's death certificate in 1910 and James in 1954 - on both White is spelled Whyte. I will explore that spelling and see what comes up.

Thanks GB - GR has done this on several occasions - the results page says that there is a relevant record, then says that there isn't one!!

1865 14th November

John Jones, 54 Batchelor, Farmer - no father named on cert

Margaret White, 42, Spinster. father - John White, farmer

One witness looks like Samuel White and the other Elizth Richards.

Sent the image but if she is 42 are you sure it is the correct marriage

Can someone check this on FMP please?
Margaret White married 1865 Shropshire.

Although GR gives the following, no record is shown

Shropshire Marriages 1 match

Yes - Shropshire BMD concurs! The place of marriage is given as Trefonnen, Oswestry. It's probably normal to spell it Trefonen

As I'm having trouble with searching new sites, do an internet search for English Marriage Certificates + images - there are plenty of examples on the net.

ADDED - the following link shows examples of the English/Welsh BMD certificates post 1837

As requested - If you have easier access to the document here is more detail:

Margaret White; year 1865 image quarter 4, England, Shropshire, Oswestry, volume 6A, page 1424, line 35

married

John Jones, - same as above but line number 2

Thanks so much! Am just researching someone else right now but will look into your information further. I live in Canada so my marriage certificate is quite different.

Any idea why the line number for each would be different - volume and page number are the same.

If you are using http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ click on the page number to see who else is recorded on the same page. EG

Marriages Jun 1854 (>99%)
Green Thomas Oswestry 6a 1284

1284 is underlined. Click on that and the result is

Marriages Jun 1854 (>99%)
Bailey Isaac Oswestry 6a 1284
>>>Green Thomas Oswestry 6a 1284
SADDLER Mary Oswestry 6a 1284
WARD Ann Oswestry 6a 1284

So Thomas Green married either Mary Saddler OR Ann Ward.

Shropshire BMD tells us exactly who Thomas married, and where

Shropshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1854

Surname Forename(s), Surname Forename(s), Church / Register Office Registers At Reference

GREEN Thomas, WARD Ann, Oswestry Register Office or Registrar Attended, Shrewsbury RO-OS/2/171

"Oswestry Register Office or Registrar Attended" does lay open the suggestion that they married in a non-conformist place of worship such as a RC Church. Only a copy of the MC will, in this case, tell you exactly. Other 1854 'Green' marriages do have the name of the Church recorded.

Full details for a marriage won't be on line. For Parish Records, try

Try https://familysearch.org/
http://www.freereg.org.uk/

Also google Oswestry or Shropshire parish records and see what comes up

This one might help. Although the full details of the Cert won't be available, the result ought to tell you who married who and where.

Highly unlikely Lynda - it sounds as if you are viewing a transcription of the GRO index.

Use the details you have found to purchase a copy of the certificate for £9.25 from

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

If you'd like to give full details of the couple, we might be able to find a transcribed record of the marriage certificate elsewhere.

English and Welsh MCs only give the names of the fathers, if known, and their occupations. Witnesses may be other relatives

With a bit of luck, the declared ages of the bride and groom will be given. Sometimes they lied, early certificates might just say 'Of full age' which is normally taken to mean over 21.

If you are married and did so in England or Wales, have a look at your own certificate. the format hasn't changed since 1837

Hi everyone - I believe I may have found the record of marriage of my great great grandparents. Unfortunately by viewing the 'free" document,(which is all that is available) all I get is: last and first name, Sup. Registrars District 270, Volume(6A) and Page (1424). Line 35 was reflected on the typed record transcription. This marriage occurred in County Shropshire, District of Oswestry in England.

Is there a site available where you can use this information to get to the actual document of the marriage that would hopefully show their ages and their parent's names?

thanks so much.
