FTM 2014 has the facility to sync directly with your tree on Ancestry so there is no need to transfer copies by Gedcom. This means that no matter which tree you update the next time you sync both are brought in line with each other.

You can set it to sync automatically each time you open and close FTM
or manually. I choose to do the latter as it means I don't have to wait each time I open FTM.

Thanks again KenSE

I was looking at the little arrow against it in programmes-have taken out 2010 for now !

I haven't bothered to uninstall FTM2012 yet, but I see if I select Control Panel, Programs, Uninstall that both FTM2014 and FTM2012 are there.

So it should be easy enough.

Me again-sorry :-(

After previous up-grades (FTM) from 2010 to 2012 both are still on the computer and I cannot see a way to uninstall them-is it possible ?

Thank you :-)

Yes but you can easily delete any copies you no longer need.

ElizabethK Report 26 Jun 2014 14:48

Thanks KenSE

So does that mean I end up with another copy of the one from Ancestry ?

When you produce a gedcom file it will download it to .ged. You then save that as a file with a unique name of your chosing.

That will then not overwrite the original one. If the original is still in your downloads folder then you browser may overwrite it but will probably keep both (depending on the browser you use).

Having got FTM 2014 sorted out can someone remind me-if I download a gedcom of my Ancestry tree will it automatically over- write the one I have off-line (I have added more to the on-line one)?

Success :-)

Went onto the Avonquest site and trawled through their "technical support" FAQ and found one re Failure of Updates to Install-they suggested R clicking and it worked !! :-D

ElizabethK

ElizabethK Report 25 Jun 2014 08:56

There is nothing to indicate what systems are supported on the product and I cannot see it mentioned on the site-it has downloaded successfully-I just cannot open it !

Wondering if contacting Avonquest would be worth a try ?

Interesting - It is only Ancestry who appear to have dropped XP from their list of suitable OS's.

All other supplier sites I have checked say XP is ok for FTM 2014, which is what you would expect for software which was still being developed in 2012!

It is also reported by some users it won't work with W8.1

well its different thats for sure

have to admit as the PC is still working OK I tend to stick with what I know and use the PC rather that the laptop

Wasnt the idea when I splashed out for a new PC and decided a lap top would suit me better

They suggested I contact Microsoft to see if they had any suggestions-I know what they will say without asking-upgrade !! :-)

Are you managing with Windows Seven OK- I do not embrace change easily :-)

Yes i am using XP on my main PC . Recently bought a new laptop with windows 7 on it and my FTM 2006 wasnt compatible on the laptop

Bought the 2013 FTM and installed it on the lap top then had the option of downloading my tree from Ancestry that I had uploaded from version 2006 from my PC

Very clever it downloaded it and put it into the new 2013 format . Phew !! was hoping i didnt have to redo my FTM as Its quite a big tree with lots of twigs .

I get email now with avanquest offers but I just delete them

Thanks Reggie

Would appear to be academic now :-(

Went through the Installation process-could not open tree without installing update "patch"-patch would not install-telephoned Ancestry, as I am still using Windows XP and Windows no longer supports XP Ancestry software is no longer compatable either :-(

New system gets closer !
