Mocavo - new to me.
But looking at those links, it seems to be a 'free to view' type of site. If that is correct (??) why would a commercial group want to absorb it?

Never heard of Mocavo but have just used it to access US census for free.Maybe I will not have to pay for FMP worldwide anymore.

Never heard of it before this thread.
The opening page for the search does have a 'sign in' tab - after trying to filter results, it keeps asking if I want to sign up for a free trial of the Gold membership.
Free Trial implies that that there will be a subscription involved. That might be why FMP is interested.

Just had an e-mail from FMP offering "1 month free"-reading the smaller print it is 1 month in addition to a 1 or 12 month subscription !

The US census index might be free, but the transcriptions are less informative than FS's, even though they have a couple of extra details.

Click on the state (PA here) and select the appropriate NARA reel # (in 1920, it matches the last 4 digits of the GD film # - in 1880, only the last 3 digits match, and 1910 needs an FS catalog film look-up to get the NARA reel #).

I presume their US census transcription is independent of the FS/Ancestry one, but I've not checked.
If so, it's handy having an alternative, for those occassions when Ancestry stuffs up. One does get info on the rest of the h/h, so one can use this to search on Ancestry/FS if needs be.

I was very pleased to find an online copy of:
The 13th Battalion Royal Highlanders of Canada, 1914-1919

My dad's cousin served with them. I'd seen his listing at CWGC, and had checked out the unit war diary for 9/1916 - the month of his death, but I was very pleased to read an actual account of the action in which he died. Although in Somme terms, it was just a minor action, in the one day the battalion lost 1 officer killed, plus 6 wounded, and 60 other ranks killed, plus 247 wounded and 16 missing. The nominal strength of a Canadian battalion was abt 1250 all ranks - the book is dedicated to the battalion's 1291 dead - there's probably 3 times that # wounded.. I find it hard to get my head round such numbers.
