Can someone tell me, please, are these held by the church or in some central place?

The date I am interested in is 1904 for St Margaret and All Saints, Barking Road, Canning Town. Church don't seem to answer the phone so can't ask them!
Not listed on SEAC as it's a Catholic church.

Thank you.

I can't amswer your question Janice, but have you tried emailing them?

Assuming it's this church!

Right church, yes.

I'm actually asking this for a friend as she isn't on Genes. Yes she has e-mailed but they don't reply. If she knew the registers were there, she would visit them, but it's a long way to go on the off-chance.

Edit: the e-mail address in your link is different so she'll try that one. Thank you :-)

The obvious thing to do is to call the church direct.

I have found that many churches (no matter the denomination) are not that good at answering emails, often the people who help out are older and not that computer savvy.

A quick phone call is also better, you can explain what you are looking for and get a rapport going with the person at the other end. You cannot beat talking to someone. It really does make a difference.

I can say in all honesty, that whenever I have had to phone any church the response has been amazing. After initial contact, I have then found they will sent via email the information I have been looking for. This is from churches in Surrey, Essex, Ireland and Guernsey.

Thanks everyone. Church has now responded: the phone is only manned 2 days a week just for a couple of hours so you have to time it right (but without that info being available before you try lol!)

Just in case it helps anyone else. If you establish where the Catholic Diocese HQ is for the Church concerned, you may find they have old registers. If they have a website you may find they have an email contact and/or phone number for an archivist. However, you need to bear in mind that the person concerned is unlikely to be full time, so be prepared to wait for a reply. As an example Nottingham Diocese covers the whole of the East Midlands, their archivist is also a parish priest & only visits the archives a maximum of 1 day a week. You also may find that a few parishes have provided information to the county records office for the church concerned, in some cases fiches may be available.

Looking at "Guide 1: List of Sacramental Registers" held by the Dioces of Westminster Archives, it's not clear to me that the Diocese crossed the R Lea - it does include Poplar which is on the West bank.

Their web site is http://rcdowarchives.blogspot.co.uk/

OK found that the Diocese of Brentwood covers the London Borough of Newham.
