hi
my sister in law now deceased had middle name of MARIS and her sister named her daughter with the same name but not sure where the name came from so any ideas would be gratefully received i have searched the maris with their surname for past relatives but no luck

Hi Seagate.
Maris isn't too uncommon as a first name, so it might just be they liked it!
Have you traced the family back at all? If not, start with finding your sister-in-law's birth record.
Not sure what this means: ' i have searched the maris with their surname for past relatives but no luck'.

i have searched and found here birth record and is just says joy m and the surname of birth so obviously as you say it must be a name they just liked and not a past relatives name

There are quite a number of births for Maris shown on freebmd.

There doesn't seem to be a geographical concentration which is no help.

As a surname it comes from the French
