Does anyone who uses FTM know if it is possible to run seperate lines of the same named family , who don't currently link up,under the same title ?

I know I can do it off-line but then I do nt get the "hints" which are helpful..sometimes :-)

you can do a link up for the same names and it will put them in the right family order.

for instance two brothers married sisters on my tree and putting them both in I had the brides father and mother in twice.

I did the link up and FTM put them into the same family . it comes under the People heading and merge all duplicate individuals or you can merge two specific individuals

Thanks Shirley.. but I will have to start another tree (I think) with the same "tree name"" won't I ?-I cannot see a way of starting a new family line-same surname-where there is no apparent link at the moment :-|

if you start a new tree you wont be able to merge individuals if you do find a connection later.

it will want you to give the new tree a different name to one already have started

You could try..

Choose a couple in your tree and add a child and call it X (If you use X and there are no other Xs in your tree then you will easily find them again)

Add the info, that you want kept as a separate line, to the individual X.

Delete X.

That should then leave you with a 'floating' family/line.

The answer to your original question is yes, most certainly.

FTM will allow you to have as many family lines as you wish, connected or otherwise all on the same database. In fact you could have multiple versions of the same family tree, although I can't think why you would want to do this as it would get rather confusing.

To add a new unconnected person, simply click Person, then Add person and select Add unrelated person. Continue to build the new line from there. If at a future time you find you have the same person in more than one family line you can then merge them together.

This is something I have done on many occasions as one of my interests is to research mini on-name/ family studies from a particular location or area which usually starts off with some one in an new and as yet unrelated family line.

Your 'Tree Name' is whatever you want to call it, it is not linked to any of the names or families in your tree.
