Marriages in Cathedrals

Hello,
I wondered if anybody knows a reason why a couple would marry in a Cathedral rather than a local church in the 1700's?

They may not have actually married in the cathedral or main church - often the registers of local chapels within the diocese are recorded within the main church registers.

The cathedral may have been their local church

When I lived at home my local church was St. Georges Cathedral (close to the Elephant and Castle).

So although I did not marry their, my friends did. And when their parents married their local church was Westminster Cathedral.
