Ordering Birth Certs on Phone

My h has ordered me several birth certificates previously without realising that we could have asked the GRO not to take payment if the mother was incorrect? We did it online.

Just wondering what the procedure is for telephoning, please? Does this mean that it is best to just order them individually because of payment issue if one was correct and several not?

Many thanks for your help in advance :-)

Think you can order online without giving a GRO ref but with quoting a parents name

Costs more without the GRO ref but you get the right one

Best to double check with them though as have a feeling in the back of my mind that they may have stopped this some time ago

Look at their website, and see what they say about ordering certs

Payment in advance.
Certificates are £9.25 for standard delivery time.
Money will be refunded for any certificate which cannot be supplied.

But if you quote the GRO ref they will send you that cert .I dont think they do any cross checking even if you state a parent name

As Shirley said. You either order with the reference and nothing else or order without but giving a parent or such.It is much safer to ignore the reference altogether.

Thank you all so much. I've successfully ordered a certificate through GRO on phone.

For anybody new, don't make the same mistake as me and quote the ref no, i.e. Vol. no. and page no. I was doing it online and paying money for unwanted certificates. There is a difference, a certificate ordered with the references does come the following week whereas a 'Search' given by phone without references takes 3 - 3 1\2 weeks so I was told.

Both services are £9.25. They email to say if they have not found the correct mother with a 'Search', and payment is not taken. I was told that only one certificate can be ordered with any one call but that several 'Searches' can be made at the same time.

glad thats sorted I had a feeling you could still do it this way too

maybe it is the online ordering they stopped BUT it would need an example to see if this is the case

It does stop buying the wrong certs that is costly . done that several times too by using a GRO ref and taking a chance

She did say they had stopped doing something or other, Shirley. There was so much to take in that I didn't quite grasp exactly what it was :-(

Anyway, good to have find out what to do and I'm going to order a few more shortly!

Many thanks for all the kind help.

Interestingly, when I first enquired about doing the Search at £9.25, no refs needed, I was told I could do only one with each application, but could have several going on at one time.

Putting in several applications for a Search within a couple of days, I am now asked if I have more than one after I have given the initial details.

Think they must realise it saves them much time and paperwork if they do this, especially if the name of the mother is the same, maybe.
