Hi one and all need some help, I have just joined Genes it cost me £19.99 which I thought would give me access to everything, what are these credit things I am using .
I am finding it very complicated. Do I have to keep paying the money after these credits run out? Any advice welcome.
Thanks.
sue.

It depends what subs you took out
It sounds like you have the standard membership so you would need credits to view bmds etc on genes

Do you know about FreeBMD ? It's a free site for BMD,S from 1837 to approx late 1960,s it's still work in progress for later records

Hi Sue

As Shirley says, it depends on the sub you take with GR as to what you get included

You can search Ancestry for free and get some basic info on the people you are searching. If you don't want to/can't subscribe to the site, you can ask for help on here

Yes its a standard one. So why charge the 19.99 if I have got to keep buying credits. Sorry to sound so thick.

Welcome to the boards Susan Ann, the 'standard ' sub only gives you access to a certain number of things

it does NOT give acces to :

"Victorian Census Records from 1841-1901 (England, Wales and Scotland)
Birth Marriage and Deaths from 1837-2004 (England and Wales)
The complete 1911 census for England and Wales – See your ancestor's own handwriting"

Please don't spend credits on info that can be got free elsewhere ie on freebmd.org.uk or familysearch etc, always ask here if someone can help you :-)

I think that GR give 50 free credits when you join which will give you the chance to access some of the records that are "extra" to the standard membership. As and when you've used all those free credits you would have to purchase more to access the extra records.
You should be able to find a list of what records are included as "free" i.e. within the standard membership and therefore what you have to use free or bought credits for.

This is what you CAN do for the standard sub

"View trees of over 13 million Genes Reunited members
Contact members who share your ancestors to discover your family history
Join the Genes Reunited community to ask for genealogy tips and advice
50 free credits to access all of our records "

Even free searches can give you leads which you can follow up on free sites

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ for English & Welsh gro indicies of B M & D 1837-c1970
https://familysearch.org/ - loads of records world wide inc census
http://www.freereg.org.uk/ for parish records
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/ for links to other free sites

As a standard member, you can always post a thread for assistance based on your free search previews - those of us with full subs to GR or other sites love helping out :-D

Also,,,,,when you have used and viewed using your free 50 credits which ,,,,,,,,if you want to have another look at any records you have viewed unless you have saved any to your computer or used the sites Keepsafe facility ,you'll need to pay again.!!many are caught up in this trap with just a standard sub.

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 10 Dec 2014 22:19

One carification, you need to up load from your own computer to the keepsafe, not rely on the internal GR link. If you do that, you'll have to pay again as the pay-to-view/credit purchase has a shelf life.

Cripes....I love you ladies, but.....................

you've confused me!

Don't know how Sue swill feel

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 10 Dec 2014 22:55

OK......
To permanently save a record that you've viewed on GR, download it to your computer
THEN upload it again to your keepsafe on GR.

After that you can attach it to the relevant people and its there for ever.
........

Images purchased with credits have a shelf life; that's why its best to save to your computer.
Even if you were to upgrade to Platinum, if you let the sub lapse or revert to standard membership, the links to the GR viewed records are broken. You have to purchase them again.

Read this for some idea of how this site works,

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/ancestors/thread/1191812

or, of course, read the help section provided by GR.
