Maurice Report 15 Dec 2014 19:45

A friend recently said his now deceased mother told him at the age of a few months he was placed in St Vincents Convent Liverpool.

He was told this in his early teens, and never questioned why.

I will call him Michael, he was born in 1938 in Coventry, his mother allthough born in Hereford married in Coventry and spent the rest of her life there.

He said his mother was told by St Vincents to fetch him as he was seriously ill, which she did.

Reading the email reply there must be something wrong with the story.
Even after googling i cannot seem to find which St Vincents he may have been in.

Does anyone have any ideas please, as Michael has allways had a wish to visit the place.
Thanks for any replies.
Maurice.

Attached is the reply i recieved from St Vincents Convent school.

Thank you for your email on behalf of your friend concerning a St Vincent’s
Convent in Liverpool.

At the date you mentioned we had in Liverpool:-

1. St Vincent’s Convent School, in Hardy Street run by the Sisters of Mercy

2. St Joseph’s Convent - Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul

3. Infant Welfare Centre – Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul

4. St Vincent’s School for Blind: - Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul

5. St Vincent’s Approved School: Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul

6. Babies Home: run by the Sisters of the Little Ones

I outline these various establishments because your friend remembers the name St Vincent’s and it may be that he confused establishments called St Vincent’s with the Religious Order of nuns called Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul.

Could I ask one question ? In your email you move without background from a baby born in Coventry to a search in Liverpool. Are you sure that the ‘St Vincent’s’ you are looking for was not in Coventry.

Just a thought

I look forward to hearing from you further but I should point out that the above Orders of Nuns have their own archives and you will have to take up your search with them.

Best regards

Have a look here:-

Is this the place you wrote to?

Is it possible that your friend was placed in St. Vincents for adoption and his "mother" was actually his adoptive mother who brought him out of there? I hope this idea doesn't offend your friend if he was not adopted - just putting the idea out there for consideration.

Thank you for your reply Kath, and the link.

The place i wrote to i found on Wikipedia, i believed it was St Vincents convent Liverpool.

My would not be offended by the comments, if he was placed there for future adoption it never happened. He does have his full birth certificate.

At the time of the event his mother already had another son born in Coventry in 1936,

His mother and father seperated a few months after Michaels birth.

Both brothers lived with their mother until their marriages, there was no hardship involved.

It is just a puzzle trying to find the actual place he thinks he was in.
Another puzzle why did he have to go to Liverpool when there were various institutions in an around Coventry.

His elder brother whom i also know has no recollections of any of this.
I also knew his mother who did not seem to be the sort of person to make things up.

Thank you for your reply.

Regards
Maurice.
