I have found that my Great Grandfather John Walker Cattermole died 9 Dec 1871 at the Smallpox Hospital Muttoncove Devonport, but cannot find a burial place.
Did people that died of smallpox get buried in the main cemeteries or were they buried elsewhere?
He was born 26 Dec 1840 in Middlesex.

I think it's likely the hospital had its own burial ground? Cant find it online yet but other smallpox hospitals are coming up as having their own burial ground.

Hi Rambling Rose,
Thank you for your answer, I have spent years trying to find out what happened to him,
Do you know where Muttoncove Hospital was situated? I couldn't find a muttoncove on the maps that I have.
It is a bit hard for me to find these sort of things out as I live in Western Australia.
Thanks again,
Regards Elsie

Just google Mutton Cove, Plymouth and you will find some info. It was an original dockyard area for Devonport.

Also by googling smallpox hospital, mutton cove, Plymouth a couple of references come up, but the bit about smallpox/hospital must be buried pretty deep within the articles as I've had a quick look and can't see them. There are dozens of pages to scroll through as you are basically looking at books about Plymouth as a whole

Thank you Ann Cardiff,
I have obtained all the certificates over the years but took a long time to find his death as it was a lot earlier than I had expected and yes my great grandmother was Mary Ann Fisher nee Wilton.
