Thanks all for your replies. We have the info on Walter's early life up until he got married but cant find him anywhere in directories until his Watford address on his death certificate.

Ancestry has UK, Railway Employment Records, 1833-1956 which tends to be entries in the appointment books. Not all companies are represented, nor all years.

Added - there is no Walter Martin listed with the correct dob - the one there is 2 years older.
Other Walter or W Martin's have middle initials/names

Stephen, have you seen the tree on Ancestry which has Walter on it? It has his Military Record and a photo of his house in Walthamstow.
