ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

David Report 21 Jan 2015 18:12

Hi
I am making display boards for a church event following the family history of the Luke family who were paper makers in the village of Crook of Devon in the late 1700's going on to found the Piedmont Pulp and Paper Co in USA.
I have John Luke b 1797 and wife Isabella Guthrie and children from the 1841 census and have found the family as they grow on most of the census up to 1901. William Luke, b 1829 emigrated to the USA in around 1852 and set up a very successful paper company with his sons.
Any pictures and other information would be much appreciated.
Jo :-)

Thank you grey ghost and Margee. I have found all the census information and some local history about the paper mill. The sons are easy to trace but the daughters not so easy as they marry and change names. Being a scottish family there is not much information on this site but every little helps. The Virginia Pulp and Paper Company they set up is now Westvaco and massive! A descendant, John A Luke Jnr is chairman and CEO so the family are still involved.

Many of the records found by Argyllgran from the Scotland's People website can be found as transcriptions for free on

https://familysearch.org

You would still need Scotland's People as she has said to look at the originals - £7 for 30 credits. 1 credit to get a list of possibles (up to 25 a page) and then 5 to look at an actual record. Much cheaper than English certificates.

The 1911 census is also available on SP for 5 credits
